The Fono MM remains our favourite affordable phono stage, though we still wish Rega had taken the opportunity to eke even better sound out of the design

Rega
The Fono MM MK5 is Rega's pure moving-magnet phono stage, and a habitual award-winner — What Hi-Fi has named a version of it Product of the Year more than once. It does one job with no distractions: a fully discrete input stage and a two-part RIAA circuit, in the same aluminium case as Rega's Neo and Fono MC, so it reads and looks the part of a serious component. Choose it over the Fono Mini if you do not need USB and want every penny in the sound. For any moving-magnet cartridge — Carbon through Nd9 — it is the stage we reach for first.
